Skincare in your 30's

skin care in your thirties

Lately, I've had a handful of women that are around my age telling me that they want to START taking care of their skin.  I'm always a little stunned in the moment, because skincare has been on the radar for me for quite a while.  Most of these women have also never dealt with problematic skin, so when they start to see their skin change in their 30's - it's really the first time they have thought about skincare.  I have dealt with breakouts since I was a teen, so I have had an am/pm regimen for as long as I can remember.  And then I turned 30.  And it seemed like overnight, I had different skin issues. My overly oily skin was now dry.  I rarely have a breakout, but I'm noticing some fine lines.  I've had to totally re-learn my skin.  And getting to know your skin does require a little effort, but it does not have to be overwhelming.

non toxic skincare in your thirties

Friends, IT'S TIME to start taking care of your skin.  I've created this little guide to help you!  In order to care for your skin, you have to take a minute each evening to think about your skin.  It doesn't have to be super in-depth.  When you get ready for bed, just think for a second - "how's my skin doing today?" Is it dry? Is it broken out?  Does it feel heavy + congested?  Then, tailor your routine that evening to address your concern.

First things, first.  Cleanse.

You should be washing your face every night.  Yes.  Every single night.  Do not sleep with your makeup on.  If you didn't wear makeup - do not sleep with your sweat/pollution on.  I love to use an oil cleanser because it doesn't dry me out and helps to remove everything.  My favorites are One Love Organics Vitamin B Cleanser and MUN Akwi Purifying Cleanser (Code ROSEWATER for 15% OFF).  Lately, I've been using the Beautycounter Charcoal Bar (so good!) to help combat my pregnancy breakouts.  And if you suffer from skin conditions like Perioral Dermatitis, the Black Clay Soap from Osmia Organics is great.

FYI - I personally do not use a cleanser in the morning.  I will splash with water or a toner and use my Jade Roller for plumping!  I don't like to wash of all of that hard work that my products did throughout the nighttime!

This is so important. Exfoliate.

You must exfoliate.  When you exfoliate, you slough off old skin and your body creates new skin.  This is often referred to as cell turnover.  Skin cell turnover is so crucial because it requires your body to create new (younger) and fresher skin.  Exfoliation also unclogs pores, so your skin is more even + balanced...with fewer breakouts.  I recommend exfoliating 2-3 times/week, based on your individual skin.  Once you learn to assess your skin needs and see the difference exfoliation makes, you'll be able to decide how often you should personally exfoliate.

I've raved about it for weeks now, but I keep my exfoliation simple with the Beautycounter Overnight Resurfacing Peel.  It does the work while I sleep and I swear my skin looks SO, SO much better the next day!  I can really see a difference.  About once a week (or every other week), I use this scrub.  I save a scrub for a day when my skin feels heavy, congested and like it just needs to lighten up a little ;)

Time to Tone.

Toning is the forgotten step.  But it's SO IMPORTANT.  It's all about bringing balance back to your skin.  I really only use one Toner - the Mun Anarose (code ROSEWATER for 15% OFF). You can read more about it here. I'm sure there are a lot of other great toners out there, but this one has been specifically formulated to bring your skin back to it's natural balance of a pH of 4.8.  I think it's great.  I simply apply to a cotton pad and swipe it all over my face.  I also mist it at any point of the day when I need added hydration or brightening.

Make sure you moisturize.

It seems like there are so many moisturizers, serums, oils and lotions...do how do you choose?  Test them.  Order samples or travel sizes.  Go into your local green beauty boutique and ask for a sample!  They are usually an investment, so find what works for your skin.  My TOP PICK is the MUN Aknari Brightening Youth Serum.  See more of my thoughts on it here and receive 15% off with my code ROSEWATER! The other product that I reach for in my cabinet most often is the Beautycounter Balancing Facial Oil.  This one is great if you deal with breakouts AND dryness!  It seems counter-intuitive, but adding good oils back to your skin helps combat breakouts.  A lot of times, breakouts occur when our skin is too dry and our body overcompensates by producing oil to help hydrate your skin.  This overproduction of oil can cause clogged pores and lead to those nasty white + black heads!  So, moisturizing is super important!

Also, drink water.  Hydrate from the inside out.

If creams/lotions are more your thing, I get it!  It's so hard to make the switch to an oil when you've been moisturizing with a cream your entire life.  For a cream, I like One Love Organics Skin Dew.

Eye care about your skin.

Eye care.  I think this is the number one most overlooked step that's so crucial.   You've got to apply eye cream day + night!!  My top fave is the Maya Chia The Eye Achiever!  It's a serum that's a magical miracle worker for fine lines and dark circles.  For a cream on really dry days, I love the Beautycounter Rejeuvenating Eye Cream.  And my favorite little economical bombshell is the 100% Pure Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream.

Go get a facial and do them at home.

Atlanta does not have a great Clean facial spot at the moment, so this is one area where I say do-your-best and find a spa that strives for natural ingredients.  An esthetician can do some exfoliation and moisturization that works wonders!  If it's in the budget, go get yourself a facial as often as possible!  I don't do these nearly enough, but I am thinking it's about time ;)

I also do them at home.  This is one way that I get to practice a little self-care.  I take a second to assess what my skin needs and apply an at-home mask for a pick-me-up!  I LOVE THEM!  Here are my current faves:

- Leahlani Mermaid Mask - it's like a nourishing green smoothie for your face!

- One Love Organics Love + Charcoal Mask - it's detoxifying and nourishing all at the same time!

- Orgaid Organic Sheet Mask - Plumping and super moisturizing!

- Kypris Cerulean Mask - feels like a whole ocean of moisture on your face

Step 1:

Roots + Grains Cleansing Scrub:  This fine, soft (not course) cleansing scrub smells of green tea + dandelion.  It can be used as a cleanser alone, or you can leave it on for 15-20 minutes as a clarifying mask.  I NEED this scrub in the summer because my skin feels heavy at the end of the day from the sweat, oil and pore-clogging residue from the summer heat.  After this scrub, I feel lighter + more refreshed.

Step 2:

Rose + Seaberry Nourishing Moisture Elixir:  I've already sprayed it on my face 3 times while writing this post because it's SO refreshing.  You can really detect all of the botanicals when you spray, making for an uplifting experience.  The rosewater (!!!) and aloe add hydration to your skin, while herbs and botanicals (think seaberry, sunflower and sea kelp) help to tone your skin.  Spray liberally after cleansing and HELLO GLOW.

Step 3:

Fruit Enzymes + Starflower Overnight Resurfacing Oil:  The first thing that you'll notice is that the oil is bright blue!!  Thank you, Blue Tansy for your amazing resurfacing properties.  And you can thank the pineapple, starflower and pumpkin for the brightening.  This oil is meant to be used overnight and I wake up to hydrated, supple skin.  It's LOVE!

Leahlani Mermaid Mask Review

leahlani mermaid mask

If the name alone doesn't have you curious...how about that rich GREEN color?!  The Leahlani Mermaid Mask definitely wins the award for 'most unique' masking experience.  I really did not expect it to be so GREEN.  It's beautiful really and like a green smoothie for your skin.

Not only can you drink your greens, but you can also nourish your skin with them!  This mask gets its emerald green color from organic chlorella and organic spirulina.  It's made in Hawaii from the purest ingredients and you can read more about all of the ingredients here.

The mask can be applied a couple of times a week!  I have already used it twice this week because it made my skin SO SMOOTH and my dry patches disappeared!

To apply:

- Face must be moistened.  I use my Little Barn Apothecary Aloe + Rose Spray.  You could use water, but I like to add extra nourishment with rosewater.

- Apply mask all over, avoiding under eyes.  The more moisture on your face, the easier to apply.

- Leave on for 5-15 minutes and rinse with cool water.

- I follow up with Kypris Beauty Elixir III Prismatic Array to lock in moisture.

I really think this mask is for everyone and it's such a great price point at only $32!  Have you tried it?  Comment below or on my Instagram post with your review!

My Winter Skin Savers

winter skin savers.JPG

I REALLY STRUGGLE WITH...

I really struggle with finding the right combination of moisturizers that won't weigh my skin down in the wintertime.  I feel like I have my skin in a pretty good place this season and have even left the house the past two days with no makeup on.  Here's what I've been using:

- Masking with Little Barn Apothecary Calendula + Lycopene Hydrating Mask, Mild Exfoliant.  One very important element of skincare is exfoliation.  You want to constantly slough off dry skin, so that your skin has to naturally work to rejuvenate itself and create new skin.  That's how you can look your best and brightest.  However, it's difficult for me to take any sort of grainy product to my face when it's dry - that's why I love this mask.  It mildly exfoliates to help reveal new skin, as well as hydrates.  You can leave this mask on for as long as you'd like - and I do. Even when you wash it away, there's a serum that's left on your skin- which works great under makeup or as a leave-on for part of your bedtime routine.

- Cleansing with One Love Organics Vitamin B Cleanser.  I am ALL about oil cleansing.  365. All year long.  Oil cleansers dissolve makeup, removing a step for you in the evenings.  And they leave your skin hydrated.  More oil always.  Which brings me to my next point - 6 out of 7 days a week, I don't cleanse in the am.  I like to leave whatever work my skin was doing overnight alone.  I simply add toner + moisturizer, before applying makeup.  If I do cleanse in the am, it's because my skin is parched.  In that case, I'll use the Beautycounter Cleansing Balm.  It's a miracle worker.

- Toning with Osmia Organics Active Gel Toner and Little Barn Apothecary Aloe + Rosewater Balance Mist.  If you are skipping toner - that's probably the reason why you haven't learned to love oils/serums for moisturizing.  Toners create a neutral surface for your moisturizer and makeup.  Everything goes on better with a toner.  I use the OO Active Gel Toner after cleansing at night.  The LBA (or any other natural rosewater spray like this one or this one) has multiple uses.  Which is why it's my all-time favorite beauty product.  I spray my face before applying foundation, or directly on my foundation brush with my foundation.  (You will not believe how much smoother your foundation goes on!)  I also spray my face to set my makeup (avoiding eye makeup).  On top of foundation, bronzer and brush - it just makes everything kind of sink in and gives a more natural look.  I also spray rosewater throughout the day, when I need extra hydration.  It is a MUST.

- Moisturizing with oils.  I am super obsessed with Vintner's Daughter.  The creator worked tirelessly to come up with a hero product, using all natural oils.  I can feel this product working on my face and literally notice a difference.  Worth every penny.  I love oils, but one thing I have missed since transitioning to clean beauty is creams.  Creams are rare in the clean beauty world because conventional lotions are made with so many cheap, toxic preservatives and binding agents.  I love a cream consistency in the wintertime and I use One Love Organics Skin Dew or Osmia Organics Purely Simple Face Cream.  Both of which, I mix with the magical Osmia Organics Nectar.  **Whichever moisturizers you choose, make sure you bring them down your neck to your chest!

- Don't forget the eyes and lips!  The product that has most helped my dark circles is the Maya Chia Eye Achiever.  Hands down.  It works.  For tone (fine lines and brightness), I love 100% Pure Coffee Bean Eye Cream (really inexpensive too - $15 for .3 oz).  And when my eyes just feel so dry, the Beautycounter Rejeuvenating Eye Cream.  It's like a big drink of water for my eyes!  For winter lips, my faves are Osmia Organics Lip DoctorRevive Lip Balm (inexpensive), Oy-l for bedside table and Henne Organics Lip Tint ($10 OFF) for a color option.

Happy Hydrating!
