Non-toxic SPF for the Whole Family

nontoxic safe clean organic sunscreen

Have you heard?  As of May 1, many common sunscreens are being banned in Hawaii, due to the destruction that their ingredients cause to the coral reefs.  Read more here.  Can you imagine?  If these ingredients are so destructive to sea life, what are the effects that they are having on our bodies?  When you apply a lotion to your body, it seeps into your pores and truly effects your blood, organs and nervous system!

Label reading is a tough job and we don't always know what to look for.  I have been asked about sunscreen by SO many this summer, so I put together a list of my top favorites for your entire family.  The basic answer for you is to use products with mineral filters vs. chemical filters - look for the active ingredients of zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. DO NOT USE products that contain oxybenzone or octinoxate.  These are the ingredients that have been banned in Hawaii and they are found in many common products at the drug store like Coppertone, Banana Boat, and Blue Lizard.

This list is a compilation of the products that I have tested and choose for our family. At the bottom of the list, you will find products that I would choose (and not choose) at Target if I found myself without sunscreen and had to make a quick Target run.  They aren't my top choices, but this happened to me recently and I had to make a decision, based on their selection.  If you can, order your products ahead of time from one of these superior choices - but in a dash, I've got you covered ;)

Green Beauty Favorites for Travel

packing essentials

One of my top favorite things in the world is a warm escape, right in the middle of Winter.  Jonathan and I have made a little winter escape at the beginning of the year, every year since we have been married (half way into our fourth year!).  We haven't always made it on an airplane - two years ago we staycationed at Barnsley Resort.  This year, we are heading somewhere warm and I am SO READY.

Jonathan and I look forward to this trip at the beginning of the year because we use the time to plan for our year ahead.  We talk about our goals for ourselves and our family.  We also discuss how we are going to spend our time and our money.  (Jonathan is pretty wise for taking me somewhere fun to talk about one of my least favorite things...the budget.)

No matter where we stay, I like to bring my own shower items.  Even if it is a nice hotel, the products are usually ridden with heavy fragrance or yucky chemicals.  I swear, the better the hotel, the more heavy fragrance.  Yikes!  I love this Travel Shampoo + Conditioner by Rahua and Travel Hairspray by Josh Rosebrook.  Hotels typically supply makeup remover wipes these days (to avoid having your makeup on their towels) but I like to take a few of these individually wrapped makeup remover wipes - the RMS Wipes.  If you have a long travel day or late nights, The Eye Achiever Eye Serum does wonders for dark circles.  My favorite deodorant comes in travel size!  The Travel-size Agent Nateur Deodorant is perfect for your carry-on!

Lasty, you CANNOT forget the sunscreen!  These are my favorites for SPF!

Ilia Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 (I wear the shade Hanalei)

Ilia Tinted Lip Conditioner SPF 15 (I love shades Bombora and Darlin)

Suntegrity Sunscreen for Body SPF 30

Garden and Gun Jubilee

My Dress, my vest (size petite xs), my boots // Chapel's vest and bow

I had my sights set on attending this year's Garden and Gun Jubilee after seeing posts of the event on social media last year.  We bought our tickets as soon as they went on sale this summer, thinking that it would be our first trip with baby girl.  (Little did we know, that she would have visited Chattanooga TN, Athens GA and Highlands NC already!)  Not only did we want to attend the Jubilee, but we also look for any excuse to visit Charleston, SC - so, why not?!

family baby charleston

We packed our bags and drove to Charleston for the weekend.  We had the best time!  The Jubilee was held outdoors at Charles Towne Landing and the weather could not have been better.  There were so many amazing vendors and live music.  We will definitely go back next year!

We love you, Charleston!  And events like G +G Jubilee make us love you even more!

A couple of our favorite spots that are a must for your next visit to Charleston:

Black Tap Coffee (3 times!) - where I had a latte sweetened with sweet potatoes!

The Park Cafe- delicious brunch, cutest atmosphere and we were seated immediately!

She’s baaaack..

So, I had to take a few weeks off from blogging and Instagram.  I had SO much going on personally – between finishing up renovations on our home, moving in, hosting family, working full-time and just being pregnant in general – this little blog took a backseat.  It was super tough for me to admit that I simply was out of steam.  I have been hard on myself these past couple of weeks.  “Other bloggers have a lot going on and still crank out posts, why can’t you?”  So many of these ‘you don’t measure up’ thoughts have crept in. They could have consumed me.  They could have made me push myself too hard.  Or worse – quit.  But instead, I decided to extend myself grace.  I decided to give myself two weeks to focus on myself and my family.  And really there’s no explanation needed.  This post isn’t an excuse really – it’s to let you all know and to remind myself that we simply cannot do it all.  That we are really only our best selves when we are operating from a healthy place – what ever that means for you individually.

‘Healthy’ for me is keeping a balance of my responsibilities and the things that I don’t have to do, but simply enjoy.  And sometimes that means that I forget to take breaks.  I forget to rest.  With that being said, vacation simply could not come at a better time! Jonathan and I leave in two days for a Babymoon and I am so ready for it!  I’ll leave the destination a mystery for a couple more days, but I’ll tell you one of the ways that we chose it is that we are flying to a continent that neither Jonathan nor I have visited!  We are certainly in for an adventure.  I’d be lying if I said I feel 100% confident taking such a big trip while pregnant.  Pregnancy is so unpredictable each day, and while mine has been relatively easy- I certainly understand that no two days are the same.  I have purchased a few things to take with me, to make me more comfortable while traveling. I’ll share more along the way, but here are just a few that I am excited about.

I was pretty set on purchasing a new pair of headphones.  In-ear headphones and ear buds are incredibly uncomfortable to me for long periods of time.  I can barely make it through a whole movie with headphones in my ears.  I found these white and rosegold phones at a decent price, with great reviews.  I really considered the Dr. Dre Beats in rosegold, but I couldn’t justify the price tag.  These headphones have the look and price tag that I was looking for – and they are super comfortable!

One of my major concerns when traveling – pregnant or not – is water quality.  As a general rule, most places outside of the US do not have the same water quality.  I find myself searching out bottled water as often as possible.  This 100% copper bottle will certainly help put my mind at ease.  Especially since I am drinking so much more water during pregnancy, this copper bottle is my new must-have for traveling! Copper is a natural antimicrobial and antioxidant – it kills bacteria and has so many other health benefits!

I use a Sonicare toothbrush at home and I don’t like to take it with me because of the space and weight that it adds to my bag.  I love this little battery operated toothbrush – it’s tiny, lightweight and gets the job done!

I am almost completely packed for our departure on Thursday night!  I am looking forward to adventure and uninterrupted time spent with Jonathan!  We hope to recharge and return home with lighter schedules!  Stay tuned for more travel posts!!

Paris is always a good idea.

“Paris is always a good idea”
— - Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina

Have you seen Sabrina? Everyone always talks about Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Roman Holiday.  But Sabrina.  It is one of my favorites – Audrey Hepburn is incredibly lovely in it and her admiration for Paris is contagious.

‘This is what you do on your first day in Paris.  You get yourself some rain, not just a drizzle, but some honest-to-goodness rain.  Then you find yourself someone really nice and drive her through Bois de Boulogne in a taxi.  The rain’s very important. Because that’s when Paris smells its sweetest.  It’s the damp chestnut trees, you see.’ – Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina

I told Jonathan that one of the reasons I love that city is because the sky is a little gloomy. Not in a sad way.  It’s more of a whimsical way.  On our recent trip to Paris, we definitely got our fair share of some of Audrey’s ‘honest-to-goodness rain.’  It actually rained pretty much the entire time, which was a huge bummer because I had been so excited to take Jonathan to this city that I love so much.  It was his first trip and we only had a few days there, before meeting up with his family in Barcelona.  We certainly made the best of the weather and we were thankful when we had moments of clear skies.

Paris2.jpg

On this quick trip, we stayed in a tiny Airbnb a couple of blocks from the Louvre.  It was the perfect location!  Although we didn’t step inside of the Louvre, we walked past it and through the gardens a few times each day.  My favorite museum in Paris is Musee D’Orsay and I just knew Jonathan would love it too.  It is filled with our favorite Impressionist painters and even the building itself is exquisite.  They were having a special Henri Rousseau exhibit and I was able to see one of his pieces that I had just seen at the MOMA in December!  It was a special moment to be able to connect two special trips, through a piece of art that I loved.

We were able to see a lot of beauty as we took in the city streets and some of the spots that make Paris so special.  Jonathan and I enjoy experiencing a culture through food + drink (+ wine!) and one of my favorite stops in Paris was Laduree.  We stopped for a break while we were shopping and had the most delightful time enjoying an omelet, tasting macarons and sipping cafe (coffee). I loved how everything was served on pastel china and real silver.   We sat outside at the Champs Elysees location and the whole experience was pure bliss.

Paris3.jpg

The rain certainly tried to get us down, but we weren’t having any of it.  It did, however, leave my skin feeling a little dry and I was so glad that I packed my One Love Organics Gardenia + Tea Antioxidant Body Serum.  I have really moved away from most body lotions- not just because of the ingredients and pore-clogging tendencies, but also because of the overall experience.  I have been looking for an alternative to slathering thick lotion onto already dewy skin (due to our Georgia humidity) and I was so happy to find this body serum.  It is applied as a spray (huge plus!!) and I usually spritz it all over my body, let it sink in, and use the backs of my wrists to smooth any that might still be sitting on my skin after a few minutes.  (No greasy lotiony hands!!)  The gardenia + tea scent is pure luxury and will leave me dreaming of Paris with every application.  It is also travel-friendly because the nozzle has a lock feature, which is great news for anyone is paranoid about products spilling in your suitcase (like THIS girl). It is just the right amount of moisture, without the slick effect that you get with lotion.

Our absolute favorite meal when we were in Paris was at Frenchie Bar a Vins.  This was my third time at this spot and it was just as wonderful as my other two experiences.  Frenchie Restaurant has a great reputation and can, therefore, be difficult to snag a reservation.  I always opt for Frenchie Bar a Vins, just across the street.  It is tiny, quaint and simple- with its exposed brick + beams, and limited menu.  You can walk right in, crowd around the bar for an excellent glass of wine while you wait to be seated, and soak in a little rustic French charm.  The meal is just about one of my favorite things ever and Jonathan was just as pleased.  We were so happy there and talk of it fondly.  For me, it is a must-go when in Pair-ree.
